How to help your dog adjust to daylight savings

The clock just fell back an hour, which would be great to actually get that extra hour of sleep.

But that’s not reality when you have a dog. Especially a dog on a schedule (which I’m a huge proponent of!). All your pup knows, is that breakfast and dinner are L.A.T.E. and they don’t understand why you aren’t getting out of bed, or why their belly is grumbling.

So while it is supposed to be beneficial for some prehistoric reason, the reality is…it’s a bit annoying. So here’s what you can do!

  1. Ignore them. Haha, but really ignore them. They should go back to sleep and wake up an hour later. This is the easiest way and takes only a couple days to get adjusted.

  2. Wake up, take them potty, and then go back to bed. This won’t get them off waking up at the time as quickly, but it will still delay them expecting to be fed. They will adjust. After all, why wake up if there’s no promise of food?

All in all, one hour isn’t that big of a deal and your pup will adjust soon. Have some patience for them and YOU this week as everyone adjusts.

Here’s how it’s gone for me so far:

  • Sunday morning: Everyone slept in and it was wonderful! Afternoon was normal.

  • Monday morning: Didn’t go as well. Pups woke up and needed to potty. We went back to bed and woke up to eat an hour later.

How are you doing? Are you getting all of your sleep? Did you try these ideas? Let me know!
